get your evil twin on!

If you haven't seen this movie, don't read this entry until you do! I hate giving movies away. If you have, then you already know it's a juicy tale of one girl's swan dive into the depths of the shadow aspect of her unconscious that rivals Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She has an overbearing and controlling mother to break free from, stuffed animals to incinerate and lots of sexy/aggressive projections to own. The apex of all of this is a wrestling match between her light and dark sides back stage on opening night, where in a fit of competitiveness and envy Nina stabs herself with a shard of mirror saying "It's MY turn." The  Jungian symbolism here is not lost on me.
It is our shadow that we project onto others and through a break down of our persona we are able to enter into this scary place with some awareness, find secrets we keep even from ourselves, in order to individuate- I'm thinking of the end of the dark crystal here- where the light beings merge with the dark beings and become something wholly other.
